In Summer 09, San Diego State University (SDSU) offered over 20 fully online undergraduate courses. With the support from both Instructional Technology Services (ITS) and Course Design Institute (CDI), this initiative of moving large classes online was a milestone for CSU. In order to help faculty to teach effectively online while aligning to current best practices, it is important to gather feedback from students about their course design and online teaching. To this end, an online course formative evaluation toolkit called fevatools was developed to provide faculty with a collection of relevant and useful assessment tools to help them evaluate their online courses. Feedback was gathered from selected faculty in the Summer semester via an online survey which solicited for their comments on their online experiences and use of formative evaluation tools. Building on these findings, a second round of data collection will be conducted in the Fall semester. The aim of this study is thus to analyze and interpret feedback gathered from these two sessions so as to recommend effective practices in online course design and evaluation.
